Reform Capital Hill

There is agreement among the American people and the Presidential candidates that our government is broken. What the candidates won’t admit is that the steps to fix our government are fairly simple and rather obvious and it focuses on fixing Congress. The recipe has 3 steps: term limits for Congress, addressing the use of the filibuster, and ending gerrymandering. If these three things happen, we will have a congress that are forced to serve all of their constituents, compromise, and tackle issues head on. We will have a Congress that are in Washington to get things done, rather than cultivate a career.

High-Speed Rail - Obama's Missed Opportunity

At the beginning of Obama's presidency, Obama was forced to face one of the largest recessions since the 1930's.  According to Bloomberg, the world's largest economy shrank 4.1% from the fourth quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2009.  Based on the condition of America at the time, and the overwhelming support that American's gave him during his transition into the presidency, Obama had the opportunity to rally America around high-speed rail in the same way that Kennedy rallied America around the Space Program.  Unfortunately, Obama decided to focus on "shovel ready" projects lead by local leaders and the Affordable Healthcare Act.

Anonymous as Freedom Fighters - or How I Learned to Love the Internet

Over the past few years there have been a variety of “headless” political movements that have developed, with the Occupy movement, Tea Party, and the Arab Spring being movements that come to mind immediately.  The movement that grabs the most attention in the media, yet is the one that the least is known about is Anonymous.  Anonymous is a hive collective originating from image boards such as 4chan. It has led DDoS attacks against organizations such as Scientology and for organizations such as PirateBay, WikiLeaks and the Arab Spring uprising.

Journalism in the Case of Shirley Sherrod, an Ethical Analysis

The mainstreaming of the Internet has led to great advances in access to information, communication and resources.  The mainstreaming of the Internet has also allowed for anyone with a connection to the Internet an avenue to share their point-of-view and insights on various topics.  The Internet has largely been a legislative-free zone with almost no regulations which has splintered the idea of gate-keepers deciding what is or isn’t news.  The optimistic would say that this splintering has helped to remove some of the partisanship and vitriol found in modern cable news.  In light of a few recent news stories, particularly the case involving Shirley Sherrod, the splintering of our news media into a legislative-free frontier now begins to be questioned if it is a good thing.

Why We Need an Integrated Diversity Program

In 1936, American novelist Tom Robbins said, “Equality is not in regarding different things similarly; equality is in regarding different things differently.” Perhaps wisdom well beyond his years, Tom Robbins has almost accurately described a notion of equality that has taken several decades to craft in business and society. The idea that equality isn’t about changing those that are different to be more like the majority, but to embrace and celebrate those differences as fundamental fibers of our society is truly a shift in traditional American paradigm. Accepting those that are different from us will help facilitate an understanding that can eventually lead to a harmonious cross-cultural existence.

Thoughts on a Digitalized Music Industry

Since the advent of the phonograph and other technological wonders that have advanced recorded music in the 20th century, music is around us constantly - in stores, elevators, at home, in the car and woven into other forms of entertainment like television, movies and sporting events. The infiltration of MP3 players and digital files within the music industry has made it even easier to be plugged in and listening to almost any piece of recorded music imaginable, anywhere, anytime. The rapid adoption of technology, however, has brought heartache to the traditional music industry business model.  The only way for it to survive the influx of new technologies in the 21st century is to create a new model.  This revitalization will occur as a result of the digitization of the industry and the overwhelming response of consumers to it. The exact shape it will take is yet to be known, but one thing is certain:  the music industry will most likely continue losing control of the music they back, and the current model will dissolve completely to make way for the future.
